Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old woman whose eviction in Madrid became a symbol of Spain’s housing crisis, died on 7 October, according to a statement from the Sindicato de Inquilinas reported by EFE.

She had been evicted on 23 September from the rented home where she had lived for seven decades. An agreement reached on 28 September would have allowed her to return, but she died before doing so.

## A national story with a local resonance

Her case prompted protests and brought protections for vulnerable tenants into the national debate. Her death is confirmed; attributing a medical cause to the eviction would require evidence that has not been established in the reporting reviewed.

**Our assessment:** for Segovia, where housing affordability shapes who can build a life in the city, the question remains how protection can arrive before a crisis becomes irreversible. This is a national story with local relevance, not a death reported in Segovia.

We return to that question in our editorial, [The Maricarmen Effect](https://www.thesegovian.com/the-maricarmen-effect/).
