THE WEEKEND EDIT
Thursday, 1 October 2026
Welcome to The Segovian.
Segovia is more than a postcard.
Today, The Segovian goes live — an independent publication created to look at the city through its stories, people, places, ideas and international community.
Here’s your first 3–2–1.
3 | THINGS WORTH KNOWING |
1. What is The Segovian?
An independent, English-language publication rooted in Segovia, with an international perspective. We cover local news, culture, food and drink, business and society, alongside analysis that connects the city with wider ideas. Expect stories about the people and decisions shaping contemporary Segovia — for lifelong residents, newcomers, students and anyone curious about the place we share.
2. The Maricarmen Effect
A housing controversy in Madrid raises a question close to home: how can a city grow without leaving people behind? Our editorial looks beyond one eviction to the pressures facing Segovia and other European cities — and the housing and infrastructure needed to support residents, students and the city’s future development.
3. Opinions
Different lives bring different ways of seeing a city. Our opinion pages welcome perspectives, arguments and ideas about Segovia and the issues affecting it. Contributions are reviewed against our editorial standards; writers’ views are their own and do not necessarily represent The Segovian’s position.
2 | THINGS WORTH DOING |
1. The Proclamation of the Queen
Music, dance and theatre bring Isabel’s proclamation as Queen of Castile to life. The Proclamación de Isabel la Católica takes place on Saturday, 3 October, at 18:15 and 20:15, now at IE University’s Aula Magna. The rain forecast has prompted the move from the Cathedral forecourt and cancellation of Saturday’s procession. Tickets are required; check the updated programme before setting out.
2. Wander the medieval market
The Plaza de los Mercaderes brings more than twenty themed stalls, local crafts and a wooden carousel to Plaza Mayor, 2–4 October, from 11:00 each day. Entry is free. Take an unhurried look around, meet local makers and see the square in a different light. Outdoor activities remain weather-dependent; check the organisers’ latest updates.
All event times are local to Segovia. Programme checked against the organisers’ latest weather update.
