Skates on for October: Segovia Patina opens its new season
Segovia Patina is preparing for its October-to-May season with groups for children, adults, families and teenagers. The club’s 2026–27 programme also includes speed skating and hockey, offering several routes into a sport that can be recreational, social or competitive.
Registration for new participants opened on 21 September. Families considering the activity should look beyond the headline price and check the group, location, level and equipment needed before committing.
What the club offers
The standard monthly fee is listed as €25 per student, with €20 for the second and subsequent qualifying members of the same family unit. Classes last one hour and follow the school calendar. Places are limited, and the club says a waiting list is created when a group reaches capacity.
Different formats serve different needs. A family group may suit parents and children who want to learn together. Teenagers or adults may prefer a group organised around their own age and confidence. Hockey and speed skating introduce more specialised skills and may require additional equipment or commitment.
Safety comes first
The club requires a helmet and protective equipment in every class. That is not an optional extra: falls are part of learning to skate, and appropriate protection reduces avoidable injury.
Equipment should fit correctly and allow movement without slipping. Parents should avoid buying skates solely for a child to “grow into” if the poor fit makes control more difficult. Ask the club what type of skates is suitable for the chosen class before making an expensive purchase.
Finding the right level
New participants should be honest about their experience. Someone who can move forward but cannot stop safely may still need a beginner group. A well-matched level makes classes more enjoyable and helps instructors manage the group safely.
If a class is full, joining the waiting list can still be worthwhile because availability changes during the season. Confirm how the club communicates cancellations and whether a trial session is possible before paying for equipment.
Questions for international families
The registration page does not promise instruction in English. Families who need language support should contact the club and ask how coaches work with beginners. Demonstration can make many techniques understandable, but children must still be able to follow safety directions.
It is also useful to check the exact venue and transport arrangements, particularly for evening sessions. A one-hour class can require a longer weekly commitment once travel and changing time are included.
A social route into Segovia
Regular local activities help families build connections that do not depend on school or work. A skating group can introduce newcomers to other households and create a shared routine through the colder months.
The best approach is to confirm a place first, understand the total cost and choose a group that matches the participant’s confidence. Consistency and safety will matter more than progressing quickly.
